If you have been born again (you know if you have truly been born again – you would have repented – turned away from sin – experienced the miraculous power of God changing you) Note: repentance isn’t just asking for forgiveness and you have to turn from sin: View the Recipe idea God gave me to help people: Recipe for Repentance.
Okay, so if you are born again, you are fully loved and accepted as Child of God. We are not trying to earn it. It has already been given to us.
God’s Love
After being born again you realize you have sin to remove from your life, and that can feel heavy and you might feel the weight of the fact that you were following the darkness instead of Jesus the light of the world. But who you are becoming is more important than who you are right now. Jesus died for you, while you were still a sinner, God already loved you then. Now you are God’s adopted child, and He looks at you with great love knowing who you will become.
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. – 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
Promises that You are Saved
13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. – Ephesians 1:13-14
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” – John 10:27–30
Jesus is talking, and you are the “sheep” if you are “saved.” This, is one of the scriptures that represents the security that you receive when you are saved, you are God’s, and you are protected!! Did you know “holy” means “belonging to God”?
HEAVEN CELEBRATES:
“I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.” – Luke 15:7
Why would Heaven celebrate if it was easy to lose your salvation? After I was saved, I struggled with this fear that I was going to mess up and lose the Holy Spirit, there is scripture that represents losing the Holy Spirit. However, I’m not going to share that because we are not called to live in fear. You will come across it as you read on your own.
Let’s Talk About This!
Religion will Push Fear of Losing Salvation
I kept listening and reading different people’s perspectives on how to live as a true born-again, saved Christian. It really bothered me because some people pushed this mindset of worry and fear that you might mess up, they made it seem like I might fall into sin and not even recognize it. But what am I trusting in then??? It wasn’t my effort that saved me in the first place, it was GRACE.
8” For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.”- Ephesians 2:8–9
I stopped reading and following fearful people because I believed that I was missing the truth. If God loves us so much, how could we so easily lose our salvation? My heart wants to please God. When I was born again, my heart was set on hating sin, and growing to become more like Jesus. So, I learned what the scripture actually says about my salvation, my security, and that I can trust in Jesus.
I’m going to tell you that you will run into these people (some are ministry leaders) they will focus on fear (these are religious mindsets). Some people live in this constant state of fear that they will mess up and God will abandon them. I had a lot of fear after I was born again, but I didn’t want to spread that, it didn’t feel right. God doesn’t want you to live that way (you will see that in the scriptures I’m sharing). If you run into religious fear, come back to this blog and read these scriptures again.
I do believe it is possible to lose the Holy Spirit (scripture mentions it), but it isn’t that simple! It wouldn’t happen right when you mess up, it wouldn’t happen without you knowing it, and you would have ALL these warnings that you were falling into deep, habitual sin, and even than Jesus would keep trying to throw you a rope. How many times did God give the Israelites a chance? Did Jesus forgive Peter when he denied him 3 times? Yes!
What Does Scripture Tell Us?
18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. – 1 John 5:18
We are told that now that we are saved, we can’t turn back to a sinful lifestyle, but that doesn’t mean we have to live in constant fear that we will fall because as it says below “the one who was born of God keeps them safe.” God wants YOU in heaven and He wants to keep you saved.
I love the way this one ministry leader said it, fearing God is “fearing being away from God, it is fearing distance from God.”
Why does evil exist? There is this theory online I’ve heard that I like: it is because darkness is the absence of light (Darkness is scientifically defined as the absence of light). Evil is the absence of God. It is the darkness. Jesus is the light. So, if you are filled with the light, don’t dim the light inside.
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. – John 8:12
So, spend time with God to keep the light bright. If I told you how much time to pray, how much scripture to read & how much time to read, how often to go to church…that would be very prideful and legalistic of me. It would be legalism and religious. It is up to you to define your relationship. When we are all children of God (born again), it is wrong to compare our relationship against someone else’s. God wants me to help people remove religious mindsets to grow though. This blog pairs nicely with my blogs: Following Jesus with Freedom from Religion.
Pleasing God is how we continue to make an effort to be righteous, to listen to God, we humbly keep showing up, repent when we mess up, it isn’t being perfect. We can’t be perfect (I wish I could). BUT that doesn’t give us an excuse to mindfully sin and think, “it’s okay, I will just ask for forgiveness later.” No, we hate sinning of all kinds because sin is from the devil (1 John 3:8-9).
SCRIPTURES ON FREEDOM:
36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. – John 8:36
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. – 2 Corinthians 3:17
2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. – Romans 8:2
We are told to REST.
JESUS SAYS
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11:28
Wait, but we have to do things… create fruit, share the Gospel, give, etc.??? Well, this is telling us we can stop worrying about everything. When we focus on our relationship with God being obedient, turning from sin, prayer, time in scripture, a heart that overflows with love for God and everyone, fruit will happen. God wants us to do everything from a peaceful state, not a mindset or emotional state of fear and worry.
We are Told NOT to Live in FEAR (REPEATEDLY)!
Why would God make sure it is repeated? Because it is IMPORTANT! Whenever we see some something in scripture repeated over and over again – we need to pay attention to it.
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:6–7
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. – Romans 8:15
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. — John 14:27
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. — 1 John 4:18
If you have been born again, fear is not your friend. If you are living in a constant state of fear, it is not from God it is from the devil. Learn God’s love, come out of agreement with lies from religion, lies in your mind, and find rest in God’s incredible love for you.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own”. — Matthew 6:34
7” Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you”. — 1 Peter 5:7
God tells us to come to him when we feel fear.
If that’s not enough for you, read Luke 12: 22-32 that says “Do Not Worry”
Holy Fear is Needed
There is an acceptable type of fear and this is “holy fear” reverence, respecting and honoring God, and being obedient (Acts 9:31). You are not equal to God. You have to come to God as a humble servant. You are His child. Don’t fall into prideful thinking.
If you have trusted parents, friends, or other family to take care of you who fall into sin, pride, and are very imperfect, how much more can you trust in the one who is without sin and has perfect love for you?
The Best Identity You Will Ever Have: Child of God
To wake up every morning knowing you are saved and pleasing God is the best thing this world doesn’t have to offer (it’s not of this world). Being part of God’s kingdom is better than anything the world has to offer (not money, not social status, not material things, not lots of people who adore you, etc.). You are safe and secure. You are protected.
All of the New Testament is good to read after being born again, but Romans does a good job at explaining what it means to be a Child of God (Peace with God: Romans 5, No Longer Slaves to Sin: Romans 6, We Belong to Christ Romans 7, We are God’s Child: Romans 8).
You can obtain peace that transcends all understanding!!!
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:7
Only Life Goals that Really Matters: Get your ticket into heaven (DONE!), and then have God say “well done you good and faithful servant” when you get to heaven.
You want to be a good and faithful servant? View the Life Cheat Sheet Blog God told me to write. I believe if you really utilize it, it will help you. You will see it is all about prioritizing God and following the greatest commandments in the New Testament NOT old.
If you are on the Narrow Path CELEBRATE!
The path is narrow so we should take great joy in being a child of God! We should take great joy in knowing that we are on the narrow path. If we never achieve all our worldly personal goals here on Earth, it won’t even matter because we are going to spend eternity in Heaven. This life on earth is way shorter! In Heaven, we won’t care about all the worldly things we didn’t accomplish on earth, the bad memories, or the things we never got to do. I believe we will be so filled with peace none of that will matter anymore.
HEAVEN:
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4)
