First, this is my own art representation – I created it before I had the Holy Spirit, so this isn’t like an image I copied from somewhere, or received from God (at least I don’t think so). I just looked at it a year or more later and said “this is the holy spirit.” Perhaps the Holy Spirit is in the middle of the living water. Our bodies are roughly 60% made up of water.
I see a light that is trying to spread. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is being filled with light.
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” – Ephesians 5:8
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” – John 7:38
The “rivers of living water” flowing from the believer signify that the Holy Spirit does not merely bless the individual alone; he/she has overflow to bring God’s love to those around them.
Do you have to feel something physically when you are filled with the Holy Spirit? Are you supposed to speak in tongues? NO and NO!
Yes, some people receive the Holy Spirit and start speaking in tongues. I met someone who had that exact experience, and she found it hard to believe that it wasn’t true for everyone. There are churches built on this concept that speaking tongues is the sign of receiving the Holy Spirit. I don’t know why it happens for some and not others. However, scripture does show people receiving the Holy Spirit and not speaking in tongues. Some people also have a rush of wind, or some other physical experience – but that’s NOT true for everyone!
Okay, so both Chris and I had NO physical experience that made it evident that we were filled with the Holy Spirit. We just had to believe in faith we received the Holy Spirit after we repented fully. I knew my heart was fully surrendered, so I didn’t doubt. But it was when I started to see myself changing, that’s when I knew. I also watched Chris change not through my influence, or anyone else’s, but because of the Holy Spirit. And it was incredible, I was like “wow” God is moving! I saw myself changing in ways I didn’t know I could change, like experiencing peace or patience when I normally would be aggravated. I stopped seeking validation from the world, I stopped caring about other’s opinions of me. My hate for sin growing and more easily identifying sin, my view on life, habitual sins just vanishing in my mind (door closed), the bible making more sense. There are so many signs, like I feel God’s love more than ever before, and I have an overflow to bring His love to others. I have NO doubt that I am filled with the Holy Spirit.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18
THE TRUE SIGN IS INTERNAL TRANSFORMATION – NOT SOME PHYSICAL THING. I’m a new creation. So, it’s impossible for me to doubt.
