Would the concept of morals exist if there was no God? It is an interesting thought right? If you do not believe in God, how do you have any morals? How do you have a consciousness that gives you a sense of right or wrong? Where do you think morales come from?

Well, the bible has stories of a time when it seemed like people had no morales and no sense of right or wrong. It was chaos! Back in the days of Noah, no one was seen as righteous except for Noah! “And the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” Genesis 6:5 About a thousand years later when people finally obtained some rules on how to live from God (10 Commandments) things were a bit better. Over 1,900 years later, people finally obtained the Holy Spirit and as far as having morales things were even better. Let’s dive into this!

What did Noah’s day look like?

I imagine people killing each other out of revenge, lying, rape, idle worship, adultery, blasphemy, occult practices, etc. Just imagine the greatest sins people can commit and they are doing this without any sense of guilt. They have no thoughts that are not evil. So it makes sense that God was angry. I’m not going to share the whole story, just that God told Noah to build the Ark and the whole Earth was flooded. Noah and his family are the only humans left alive.

Rules to Live By

Israelites saw miraculous signs from God and were saved from Egypt, and they still sinned a lot on the journey to the holy land. Then, the Israelite’s receive the 10 commandments with rules from God on how to live. It was easier not to commit sin because they had some written rules to follow, but they still sinned a lot because they didn’t have a moral compass inside of them. Even the disciples struggled with sin and doubt no matter how many times Jesus performed miraculous signs. But after Jesus dies on the cross (for our sins), rises from the dead on the third day, and goes back to Heaven people receive the Holy Spirit.

“When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God boldly.” Acts 4:31

“Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: About sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.” John 16:7-11

Everyone Has a Moral Compass

Everyone has a moral compass, it may not be very evident to some who have been following Satan for far too long. But even Atheists have a moral compass. How would that possible if there is no God? If there is no God within us? How can you say this is right and this is wrong?

The holy spirit is inside all of us and that’s how we have an internal moral compass. Whether you are a follower of Jesus, a Christian, another religion, or are even Atheist, you have a sense of what is right and wrong. Of course we also have rules put in place by our government, and here in the United States the Declaration of Independence.

Declaration of Independence References God

Reading the declaration you will see we follow some of the rules of the 10 Commandments back in Moses time. I’m pretty sure these commandments were referenced when the Declaration was written. Although some may consider the Declaration of Independence to be a secular document, it actually contains four mentions of God, each of which demonstrates the founders understanding of God’s nature and power. (Morken, 2023).

Even on our current money we have “In God We Trust.” It is the official motto of the United States. We can see that there is some type of morales that follow the Ten Commandments in virtually every country’s government. No country allows stealing, murder, and coveting other’s personal property. You can also see moral character in the way country’s care for the poor, the sick, the elderly, and honor family.

IF none of these biblical events ever happened, then do you think the whole world would still have these morale based laws? Don’t you think people would be doing the things that people were doing in Noah’s time with no sense of right or wrong, and with no sense of fear of punishment or guilt?

Morales Don’t Come From Laws Alone, Even The Laws Came From Somewhere!

Even though you may have grown up being taught morales and ideas of what is right or wrong, this came from somewhere. You might say well my fear toward doing wrong things is because I can get caught, put in jail, because there are punishments for doing the wrong things. However, I’ve seen people who have no faith in anything (atheists) doing kind and compassionate things for others, sometimes doing a better job than those that label themselves as Christians. This is from listening to their inner conscious which has a strong moral compass due to the Holy Spirit.

We see people who can forgive those who abused them, people forgiving people who murdered their child or their spouse, and that is an amazing thing! It is easier to just be full of hate and anger toward that human. It is very much human response to feel hatred and anger, and some even want bad things to happen to those who hurt them. But yet, people forgive and pray for that person, how can that be? How is that possible without Jesus? I will talk a bit more about forgiveness in another blog, but I have one or two blog topics to cover before that.

The Bible Leads Us to Having Better Morales

Did you know that you can be more morally centered the more you try and read the bible and follow Jesus? People don’t really talk about that. No one ever talks about how it benefits you either! I will discuss it in my next blog.
